DEDHAM VALE
Beautiful historic country house, steeped in history and architectural detail, sitting in the heart of Constable Country’s Dedham Vale. The clients’ brief called for a bespoke kitchen of timeless quality that honours the building’s period character while meeting the needs of modern functional living.
Clients Design Brief
Individual bespoke sensitive design, every element conceived to complement the house’s original features — windows, moulded architraves and exposed oak beams — and sit comfortably within the domestic scale and proportion of the rooms.
Craftsmanship and materials, traditional joinery techniques married with meticulous contemporary functions. Cabinetry in painted hardwood with refined mouldings, solid oak used where warmth and tactile presence are required.
Timeless palette, a tasteful décor of muted, heritage-inspired colours chosen to enhance light and complement the stone and timber of the house. Soft chalked creams, warm greys and sage greens create a calm backdrop for period detail.
Key features
AGA as focal point, the classic cast-iron Black AGA positioned as the kitchen’s anchor, paired with sympathetic storage and discreet modern cooking appliances sited nearby for everyday convenience.
Central island, generous island providing food-preparation surface, casual seating and additional storage. A quartz work surface offers durability and a contemporary clean line that contrasts subtly with the traditional joinery.
Cicular Oak breakfast table and pedastal, a beautifully crafted, freestanding oak breakfast table arranged adjacent to the island to encourage family gatherings; its solid, hand-finished surface references the house’s timber heritage.
Bespoke breakfast cabinet, with bi-fold slide away doors reveal the period oak internals with lit shelving and serving space, an elegant, practical solution that keeps the table clear and presents preperation space with power sockets , and conveniant adjacent china and food storage. Hand carved details to the cabinet frieze and solid oak drawers add a lovely personal and individual touch.
Sympathetic integration of beams, existing oak beams retained and sympathetically complemented by joinery detailing and lighting. Recessed and directional fixtures set into the beams where necessary, preserving sightlines and ambience.
Attention to detail, handmade dovetail soft-close drawers, wood carcasses, bead and bolection-style profiles, subtle polished nickle hardware chosen to feel authentic and durable. Cornice, plinth and cornicing details carefully matched to complement existing joinery.
Functionality
Practical layout, clear work zones for cooking, preparation, washing and storage. Ample drawer-space for utensils and larder storage designed for visibility and ease of use.
Modern conveniences discreetly incorporated, integrated refrigeration, dishwasher and modern extract systems concealed behind period-appropriate cabinetry, task lighting and power carefully positioned to maintain the aesthetic.
Hard-wearing surfaces, quartz for the island and selected worktops for durability, with oak for the breakfast table and shelving where warmth and patina are desired.
Finishes and fittings
Paints, hand-mixed durable egg-shell paints in heritage tones complement the original stone and plasterwork.
Metals, polished nickle hardware chosen for longevity and to harmonise with AGA trimmings and other metalwork.
The kitchen feels both lived-in and curated, a Cooks Kitchen, a room that honours its past yet performs effortlessly for contemporary family life. Light, proportion and tactility create a welcoming, refined space in which architecture and furniture are in sympathetic conversation.
A bespoke kitchen that reads as an authentic part of this beautiful historic house, carefully considered, beautifully made, and designed to deliver enduring function and quiet elegance for years to come.
