A real Cooks’ Kitchen that reads authentically French yet wholly functional for modern use. The design responds to the house’s existing architecture, emphasising rustic formality, painted patina finishes, earthy tones and quality materials combine with considered storage, generous work surfaces and robust cooking appliances to create a space both beautiful and hardworking.

Colour and finish

Palette is warm, muted earths — soft taupe, warm greys, clay and ochre undertones. Accents in aged zinc and polished nickle.

Painted patina, cabinetry finished with a layered, hand-distressed paint technique to reveal subtle underlayers and brush texture, giving that gentle worn elegance typical of a French farmhouse.

Original French sourced handles and knobs in patinated metalwork and hand blown glass harmonise with the painted finish and oak beams.

FRENCH FARMHOUSE KITCHEN

Layout and workflow

Cooks’ kitchen zoning, clear separation between heavy preparation, cooking zone (AGA, large prep surfaces) and secondary tasks (plating, service). The AGA is positioned for ventilation and sightlines, a substantial prep island sits centrally with honed granite top for durability.

Walkways and clearances allow generous circulation to accommodate multiple cooks and guests.

Large functional Farmhouse sink, AGA and primary refrigeration linked with direct, unobstructed paths. The walk-in larder adjacent to the prep zone for rapid access to dry goods and small appliances.

Surfaces and materials

Worktops - Honed granite in a warm, matte finish — suitable for heavy-duty use, resists staining and complements the travertine flooring beautifully. Colour choice picks out the palette tones of soft grey greens and warm veining.

Flooring is a beautiful honed natural travertine laid in a traditional French pattern for timeless character and a hard-wearing surface that patinates elegantly with use.

Backsplash - Antique mirror tiles behind the cooking and sink elevation to reflect light and add depth while retaining a vintage charm, tiles selected with a soft antiqued silvering, grouted to blend rather than contrast.

Preparation cabinet, a dedicated zinc patina top preparation cabinet — metal-clad interior surfaces and workspace for wet preparation, chill-proof and hygienic. Finished with a Zinc patina externally to coordinate with metal accents.

Cabinetry and joinery

Quality cabinetry, bespoke timber casework, frame-and-panel doors with traditional mullions and recessed panels. Internal fittings, solid wood shelving, Oak dovetailed drawers, soft-close mechanisms up-rated for heavy loads.

Larder - walk-in larder with timber shelving, pull-out baskets, and dedicated appliance recesses (microwave, secondary oven, wine storage). Ventilation and humidity control discreetly incorporated, interior finished in a washable limewash and neutral paint to maintain the rustic aesthetic.

Sink base, reinforced to support a large ceramic farmhouse sink with integrated draining racks and concealed waste bin systems.

Fixtures and fittings

Large farmhouse apron-front sink sized for heavy cookware — double bowl, deep and practical, with an elegant lip that complements the cabinetry lines.

Taps - high-arched, traditional-styled bridge tap in nickel finish with a pull out hose spray for utility and cleaning.

Cooking - lovely 4 oven Black AGA as focal cooking appliance, within original brick chimney, bespoke extraction integrated into joinery and concealed behind original brick arch. Adjacent conventional oven and induction hob housed for flexibility.

French sourced handles — slim, elongated pulls and ring-style knobs in aged metal, chosen to harmonise with the patina finishes and oak.

Timber and structural elements

Exposed Oak beams reinforce the farmhouse character and coordinate with cabinetry tones — a warm, medium brown with a hand-oiled lightly distressed surface.

Joinery details, corbels, bracketed shelving and gentle mouldings used sparingly to reference French classicism without ornate fuss.

Lighting

Clusters of hand-blown French glass pendants above the island and prep areas, glass is clear and softly ribbed to scatter light and add artisanal presence.

Layered lighting - recessed task lighting under cabinets and inside larder, additional feature pendants for atmosphere, discreet dimmable lighting to control mood.

A French farmhouse kitchen celebrating effortless elegance, soft, muted colours, timber accents, zinc and matte granite worktops paired with patinated nickle fittings. Open shelving displays earthenware and copper pans, a farmhouse sink and a large, weathered table invite conviviality. Natural light, anyique tiles and delicate mouldings create warmth and refinement, blending rustic charm with timeless, understated luxury.
